Mercedes-Benz has announced pricing on the first two engine variants of the 2018 X-Class, confirming that Merc’s first pickup will be launched early next year.

Mercedes says there will be 13 variants across the two turbo-diesel four-cylinder engines, but for those thirsting for more power, a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 making 190kW and 550Nm will be coming mid-year.

Mercedes has also stated that its suspension tune will further differentiate the X-Class from its Nissan Navara donor car, helping it drive more like a passenger car than a work ute. We’ll have to see on that point.

The safety kit is comprehensive, with a high-strength passenger cell, plus large crumple zones front and rear. Seven airbags and the two child seats anchors are standard, plus there’s Active Brake Assist and Lane Keeping Assist.

The X-Class POWER trim level gets a 360-degree camera, while the PURE and PROGRESSIVE trim levels get a reversing camera as standard with the 360-degree camera optional on the PROGRESSIVE line.

Off-road, the X-Class uses a proper low-range transfer case with diff-lock as standard, but you can also get rear-wheel-drive only models as well. There’s 222 millimetres of ground clearance, and a permanent all-wheel-drive version will be available on the V6 model. Downhill descent control is standard on all-wheel-drive cars, as you’d expect.

Importantly, the width between the wheel arches allows full size pallet to fit, a rarity in most markets. And yes, it can carry 1100kg and tow up to 3500kg, but not at the same time, of course.
