Toyota Australia has announced that its midsize SUV, the 2018 Toyota Kluger, will get a suite of active safety systems as standard, though prices have gone up by a minimum of AU$950.
The safety systems (amusingly detailed in the video below) were previously only available on the Kluger Grande, which hasn’t changed the price at all.
Now included as standard on the Kluger GX are Pre-Collision Safety system, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), radar-based cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic high beam.
The GXL has increased by AU$1400, and also gets (in addition to the GX features) blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and rain-sensing wipers.
The Pre-Collision system combines a camera and radar sensor to “watch” the road ahead, checking out for both pedestrians and vehicles. If it thinks a collision is inevitable it begins by beeping and lighting up to alert the driver, while priming the braking system ready for an emergency stop.
And of course, if the driver doesn’t take any action, it will brake automatically to prevent a crash.
Under the bonnet, you’ll find the familiar Toyota 3.5-litre V6 petrol, which remains unchanged in its power and torque outputs. Thus, it produces 218kW of power and 350Nm of torque, while being mated to an eight-speed automatic.
Power is still sent to the front wheels on base models while more expensive variants have the option of both front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive.
Fuel economy is also unchanged with the 2WD Kluger using 9.1 litres/100km for GX and GXL variants while the slightly heavier Grande 2WD uses 9.3 litres/100km.
All of the all-wheel-drive Kluger models are similarly unchanged at 9.5 litres/100km.
2018 Toyota Kluger service costs
All Kluger models are included in the “Toyota Service Advantage” capped-price servicing scheme, costing a maximum of $180 per service interval, for up to three years or 60,000km – which ever happens first.
Keep your ear to the ground regarding updates to Toyota’s warranty, too. With plenty of manufacturers opting to introduce five-year warranties, the Japanese carmaker shouldn’t be too far behind.
