The 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio has been launched – a mid-size SUV that has wears Alfa’s current design language, and uses FCA’s platform and parts to create a sporting crossover.
It’s Alfa Romeo’s first SUV, and with its recent claim to being the quickest SUV around the Nurburgring, it’s not a bad first effort (check out the video below).
While that Stelvio was the QV (or Quadrifoglio), the regular Stelvio is the one Alfa hopes will be its bread and butter.
There will be two engines: a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol, and a 2.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel.
The petrol is an all-aluminium unit which makes 148kW (198hp) and 330Nm. It gets a carbon-fibre drive shaft and is matched to an eight-speed auto and “Q4” all-wheel-drive system.
Alfa Romeo claims it will get from 0-100kmh in 7.2 seconds, but still return 7.0 litres of fuel per 100 km on the combined cycle.
The diesel, meanwhile, is not only more powerful, but quicker and more fuel efficient. With injection pressures of up to 2000 bar, it produces 154kW (206hp) and maximum torque of 470 Nm at 1,750 rpm.
It’s also an all-aluminium engine, and will get from 0-100kmh in just 6.6 seconds. Fuel consumption? On the same combined cycle it returns 4.8 litres per 100km. It’s all-wheel-drive as well. In fact all Stelvios get Q4 AWD.
Alfa is also at pains to mention that the Stelvio gets 50:50 weight distribution, and there’s Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) standard across the range.
Inside, there’s leather everywhere as standard, the dashtop swoops across the car and creates a cockpit around the driver, and those huge shift paddles aren’t plastic – they’re aluminium.
Infotainment is taken care of by an 8.8-inch high-res touchscreen, and there’s DAB radio and Bluetooth telephony and streaming audio included, all running through an eight-speaker sound system.
Pricing is market dependent.
