Acura has added a new variant to the MDX crossover range, in the form of the 2019 Acura MDX A-Spec, which was first shown at the 2018 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS).

It’s the last A-Spec trim line to be added to all of Acura’s models, including the Acura RDX SUV also shown at the New York Motor Show.

To differentiate itself from the normal MDX, the A-Spec gets larger, 10-spoke 20-inch wheels painted in Shark Grey, with 265 section width.

There are also cosmetic changes, as you’d expect, including a new front end design which is more aggressive, lower sills finished in the body colour, larger exhaust tips, and a combination of gloss black and dark chrome highlights for the headlights, grille, glasshouse trim and tailgate spoiler.

Inside, it’s still a three-row SUV, but it gets sports seats (in black or red leather) that feature alcantara (man-made suede) inserts. Contrast stitching, A-Spec gauges, sports pedals, a thicker steering wheel with A-spec badging and paddle shifters, door sill logos and a faux-carbon console round out the package.

“This MDX A-Spec adds a dimension of sporty, aggressive and youthful appeal that will attract new buyers to the best-selling three-row luxury SUV of all time,” said Henio Arcangeli, Jr., senior vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

Under the bonnet is still the 3.5-litre V6, with direct-injection and i-VTEC producing 290 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque. It’s mated to a nine-speed automatic from which the power runs to all four wheels. Acura’s SH-AWD system includes torque vectoring, aligning nicely with the A-Spec’s sporting character.

Keeping its occupants safe is the standard suite of safety tech (called AcuraWatch) including automomous braking, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, lane keep assist and adaptive (radar-based) cruise control with low-speed follow function. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard.

Through its life, the MDX has shifted 900,000 units and for six consecutive years it has sold at over 50,000 units per year.

The new addition to the Acura lineup goes on sale from July.
