The Audi Q8 SUV has been teased in a styling sketch, shortly before it is revealed in full production trim through a series of videos from the German carmaker.
The teaser sketch gives us a view of the new Q8’s shapely rear end, with some slight enhancements to the proportions, as we always see in styling previews. Clearly, the production version won’t have the exaggerated width and ridiculously huge wheels, but the overall shape remains reasonably true to the Q8 concept vehicle (pictured below).
The interior of the production Q8 will get an iteration of the same dual-touchscreen setup that is found in the A8, thanks to its positioning above the Q7 as a more luxury-focussed crossover. But is still shares a lot with the Q7, running on the same MLB Evo platform, which is also shared with the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne and VW Touareg.
We’re also expecting that it will get a raft of V6 and V8 engines, including the wonderful turbocharged V8 diesel found in the Audi SQ7. And we hope (fingers crossed) that Audi Sport will see fit to make an RS Q8 featuring the same twin-turbo V8 petrol which powers the Lambo Urus.
What we’re not sure of, given Audi’s push to be the dominant luxury carmaker in China, is whether the Q8 will simply get a plug-in hybrid variant (highly likely) or whether it will fit a range of smaller engines, like the turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol, to keep it within emissions limits.
Either way, we know it will end up in Chinese dealerships.
Audi also teased the front end in another sketch, which again shows us that it will remain true to the concept vehicles preceding the production car.
Clearly, there will be minor changes like the size of headlights, how big the mirrors are, and other details that have to pass design rules for production cars.
The production Audi Q8 is set for its official reveal in Shenzen, China, on June 5. Audi says it will be produced at the company’s in Bratislava plant in Slovakia.
Using the format of a movie release, Audi has set up a Q8 microsite which will preview the large SUV in an online series which it calls “Q8 Unleashed”. Said to be produced by “Four Ring Studios”, the series follows a successful couple from the US. Audi puts it this way.
Sandra and Quentin, an extravagant power couple from the Golden State, had it all. Successful careers, a design loft, an influential circle of friends and the perfect car to match it all. But in a split second everything is about to change. Unleash five gripping episodes and be rewarded with a first glance at the most thrilling Audi SUV of all times.
If you can stomach it, it will be online from May 21 and will run until June 5. In the meantime, it may be better to watch a little piece about the Q8’s styling.
