The world’s fastest Volskwagen Amarok has beaten the lap time set by a Golf GTI during the World Time Attack Challenge at Sydney Motorsport Park.
The Amarok, which was built by the top apprentices in Australia at VW’s head office, had been pulled apart, modified and reassembled in one week, ready for the World Time Attack Challenge.
Based on an Amarok V6 Highline, a custom-built suspension package from Bilstein was added, as well as AP Racing brakesvinyl wrapped and then fitted with semi-slick Michelins. Amazingly, the engine was left untouched. And, as you can tell, the tyres weren’t rolling on the same diameter as standard.
After a standard Golf GTI set a lap time of 1:59 as the benchmark, pro driver Ben Porter hopped in to see if he could best the GTI. When the timer had stopped, the team was incredulous – the Amarok V6 had set a lap time of 1:57.01. And with that, the World Time Attack Challenge commentary team dubbed it the “World’s Fastest Amarok”.
Director of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Australia, Carlos Santos was effusive: “Thanks to this incredible team of Volkswagen apprentices, we’ve been able to show just how much power is under the hood of the Amarok – 550Nm is great for towing a boat or caravan; and now we can add smashing lap times to that list,” he said.
