Cool SUVs for guys

Today we run the risk of getting in trouble. We’re writing about cool SUVs for guys.

Let’s face it, driving around in a sleek machine with plenty of road presence is something that plenty of guys want deep down.

So, it’s time to balance out the sexes. We’ve written about what’s the best SUV for a teenage girl, so now we’re sorting through some of the most impressive machines on offer for guys.

Thing is, most of them aren’t cheap. Like a Lamborghini Countach was the pinup sports car for years, some of the below machines cost a pretty penny. There’s nothing wrong with putting a poster of any of these up on your wall, though.

Of course, we’re probably going to get plenty of calls saying “That’s compensating for something!” And we’ll duly ignore them.

What’s the appeal?

At the most basic level, the majority of men like plenty of power under their right foot. There’s something about the sound of a V8 engine that stirs the emotions, with a perfectly balanced and syncopatic beat.

Put that in a big machine that’s able to carry plenty of people, or that can head into the bush and you’ve got a machine that brings a sense of pride.

Sometimes the occasional breakdown is annoying, but when a guy can fix it himself, there’s also a sense of accomplishment – that’s why some of the least reliable SUVs are actually the most fun – the challenge of putting it back on the road brings satisfaction.

But don’t guys like sportscars?

Definitely. But there’s only so far a sports car can take you. If there’s a lot of rain around, then flooded roads won’t be the best for your low-slung sports car.

If you have a family – and plenty of men do – then trying to stuff kids and their gear into a Ferrari 488 isn’t going to work. If it starts snowing, or you’re heading away on holiday, then a sports car is a bit prohibitive.

The versatility of off-road or lifted machines means they’re much more practical, especially when carrying gear around. Men are practical creatures, so you can see why these vehicles appeal.

So, let’s get to it, with a list of some of the manliest machines around.

Top 10 manly SUVs

While these aren’t by any means the only vehicles that are manly, they’re some of the best and coolest SUVs you can buy. And we start with a classic.

2018 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon side view

10. Jeep Wrangler Rubicon

While it may not get a V8 – though there are conversion kits available – the Wrangler is undoubtedly an icon. And in Rubicon guise, there’s nothing that can stop it. Named after the Rubicon trail, this Wrangler is has so much off road ability that it will take you away from it all, and everyone knows exactly what it is.

2018 Lincoln Navigator

9. Lincoln Navigator

It’s a huge slab of a machine, this one. When this grille fills your rear view mirror, you know exactly what to do – get out of the way. But you don’t buy a Navigator for its threatening appearance when someone is going slow in the fast lane – you buy it for its smooth ride and space. Keeping the family transported has never been better.

8. Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk

If you want something that can take on a supercar, this is the beast for you. Check out the video below with an SUV taking on a McLaren.

It fares pretty well, but the amazing thing is it’s a five seat, off-road capable Jeep that can carry suitcases. And just listen to that sound. If that doesn’t put hairs on your chest, we don’t know what will.

Cadillac Escalade

7. Cadillac Escalade

Like the Navigator, the Escalade simply oozes road presence. With a 420hp V8 and a 10-speed auto, there’s plenty of grunt and enough room for eight people. The interior is gorgeous, and if you option it with black paint, those huge wheels and big chrome grille ensure you’ll get noticed. You could live in this thing, that’s how big it is – sort of like your very own Caddy-shack.

Porsche Cayenne Turbo S

6. Porsche Cayenne Turbo S

This is the original performance SUV. It came at a time when Porsche wasn’t doing too well, and the genius stroke of making an SUV handle like a sports car set the world on fire. Now, it’s the company’s best selling model, but it’s also wickedly quick, sounds the business and is built to perfection. If you can afford one, it’s worth a closer look.

Jaguar F-Pace SVR front three quarter

5. Jaguar F-Pace SVR

With its supercharged 5.0-litre V8 and aggressive body-kit, the F-Pace SVR makes the regular F-Pace look like it’s a kiddy’s toy. Designed to take on the Cayenne, the F-Pace SVR’s party trick is that brutal engine. With a Gatling-gun soundrtrack, its note is worth the price of admission alone.

Range Rover Sport SVR front view

4. Range Rover Sport SVR

The Range Rover Sport SVR is a brilliant machine both off road and on it, and its supercharged 5.0-litre V8 is the stuff of legend. It’s a bigger machine than the F-Pace above with which it shares its engine and gearbox, which means that it’s more practical and in some ways it’s the better car. You just can’t get sick of the crackling exhaust and stupendous acceleration. Boy does this thing move.

Land Rover Defender Works V8 river crossing

3. Land Rover Defender Works V8

It took decades to be created, but finally someone at Land Rover was brave enough to slot a V8 into the Defender, which is what fans have been crying out for over the years. Sure, it’s crude around the edges, but that’s part of its appeal. Who cares about the visible rivets and wavy bodywork when it looks this good. It’s the kind of car that Lara Croft would want – and that’s good enough for us.

2. Mercedes-AMG G63

The big Merc is a statement piece for coolness. It has always had a magnetism about it which draws people in. Perhaps it’s the chunky design, maybe it’s the way that sounds, but whatever it is, there’s no doubt the G-Class makes an impact. And now that it’s been brought into the 21st Century with its ultra-modern interior, it should be good for another 40 years.

Karlmann King Exterior

1. Karlmann King

But the ultimate level of coolness goes to this – the Karlmann King. You won’t see too many of these colossal machines on the road, given their exclusivity, but if there’s any other machine that exudes attitude more than this, we’ve yet to see it. It’s as ice-cold as a Batmobile, has a bulletproof exterior and makes LandCruisers look like Matchbox cars.

This is the coolest SUV any guy could own.

Honourable mention

We couldn’t include this one, because it’s not really available yet, but for a machine that will take you through any apocalypse, then check out the Devel Sixty Military Combat vehicle.
