Does a GMC Terrain have 3rd row seating?

2018 GMC Terrain driving shot

In 2010, GMC introduced the Terrain, a small crossover which was designed to tap into the booming compact SUV market. The first generation was designed to look like a shrunken Yukon, and as a result, it has aged pretty quickly.

The second generation, which started production in late 2017, has a far more aggressive front end, and more modern styling. The first version was built on General Motor’s Theta platform, while the updated model now runs on GM’s D2XX platform. As a result, the Terrain’s size limits its seating options.

Does the GMC Terrain have 3rd-row seating? No, the GMC Terrain is strictly a two-row crossover with five seats. The trunk space is too small to fit the third row, and GMC offers the Acadia as a seven-seat option.

Like the Toyota RAV4, there are plenty of potential customers who like the look of the GMC Terrain and wish it would be offered as a three-row crossover, but GMC has set out its model range so that it’s based on sizes.

If you need a compact SUV, then go for the Terrain. If you need seven seats, then it’s the Acadia you want. And if you want a full-size SUV that can fit eight people, then go for the Yukon.

In the Terrain, you can fold the second row down to make a larger area in the trunk if you need a bit more room to carry things, which is a reason some people opt for seven-seat vehicles – there’s usually a lot of room in the trunk.

But adding in a third row is a lot more work and the legroom for rear passengers would most probably be compromised.

Despite this, the GMC Terrain is quite a good vehicle, if you’re after a five-seat compact SUV. There are three engine choices, you get a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, plus LED daytime running headlights and tail lights.

If you want something a bit more luxurious, GMC also offers the Terrain Denali, which gets woodgrain trim and leather seating with seat heating. Another cool feature is the fold-flat seating, which includes the front passenger’s seat. This allows a full load-through space for long items such as poles or skis.

Which other compact SUVs get seven seats?

Well, if you’re happy to branch out away from the GMC brand, your possibilities open right up.

In the used market there’s the pre-2017 Nissan Rogue, which came with a third-row option. Then there’s the Honda CR-V, which is a good, reliable proposition.

If you’re looking to be a little more adventurous, the Land Rover Discovery Sport comes with seven seats, but it does cost a bit more than most compact SUVs.

As mentioned, things get a little squeezy for the passengers in the third row, so if you can afford to, it may be worth opting for a midsize or large SUV.
